Volunteering Greater Manchester is pleased to be able to offer two further volunteer management training days by Rick Lynch, one of the world's leading trainers in volunteer management. Please would you circulate this information to your networks and contacts.

Designing Volunteer Roles for Results, including Involving Professionals as Volunteers - Monday 28th February 2011

Although most managers are unaware of it, many volunteer roles are designed so that they make communication and supervision difficult, obscure the quality of performance, and even lead to volunteer alienation. In this session, participants will learn how to create a job that volunteers want to do and that paid staff of the organisation will support. Participants learn four major principles to keep in mind when designing volunteer roles so that volunteers feel pride, accomplishment, and a sense of personal effectiveness. Additionally, participants will practise designing work for short-term volunteers.

The workshop will also equip volunteer managers to identify jobs for professional volunteers (e.g. graphic designers, marketing experts, web-site designers, management mentors) explore ways of recruiting them, and work with staff colleagues to overcome barriers to involvement".

Leading Volunteers: The Language of Leadership - Tuesday 1st March 2011

One of the major changes in volunteer programmes in the coming years will be a shift from managing volunteers to leading them. Leaders are people who have followings. Leadership, then, consists of a variety of skills that influence others to follow. This influence comes largely from a leader's communication. Leaders communicate in ways that less influential people do not. This workshop builds participants' abilities to lead volunteers by mastering seven communications skills that are hallmarks of effective leaders".

Could you become a Cancer Champion?

The Don't be a Cancer Chancer campaign will run in Manchester from May to July 2011. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast, bowel and lung cancer and to encourage people who have symptoms to go to their GP.
This will be achieved using social marketing, advertising, working with GP practices in some of the most deprived areas and by recruiting "Cancer Champions" to help deliver these messages within communities.

What do we need?
You may be working in front line health, Local Authority environmental health/housing/leisure/social care, as a Health Trainer, in community development, or in a voluntary organisation.

We need people to act as Cancer Champions - ordinary people who may not have had cancer themselves but will deliver messages on cancer awareness and early diagnosis to people in their communities at awareness raising sessions and by giving 1-2-1 brief advice. We are looking to recruit paid staff and people with no specific knowledge about cancer or promoting awareness and early diagnosis of cancer.

What will we provide?
You will receive free, Macmillan-approved training - a full day's training prior to the start of the marketing campaign and a further half day training a month later with a training pack to take away.

Full day's training are 23rd March or 24th March, with follow ups on 13th April and 14th April 2011, respectively. (Final times/venues to be confirmed). Lunch will not be provided and trainees will need to bring there own to the full day session. The training will cover knowledge of cancer signs and symptoms, importance of early diagnosis and pathways, motivational behaviour and presentation skills.

We will give you ongoing support during the 3 month campaign to help you deliver your community sessions and brief advice session to individuals. We will also give you web-based support materials. A £250 incentive will be offered to all voluntary organisations that provide at least 2 trainees on completion of the community engagement targets.

What will you need to do?
You will need to attend both the full and half day's training. During the three month campaign you will need to commit to engaging with a minimum of 100 people (target 150), either via 1-2-1 brief advice and / or community awareness sessions. Do check with your manager or host organisation before applying and make sure they are happy to release you.

If you would like to book onto this training to become a Cancer Champion or would like more information please contact Julie Jerram at Public Health Manchester on j.jerram@manchester.gov.uk.

Due to high demand for our event Trustees: Facing the Challenge - Manchester Community Central will be running this session again on Wednesday 16th February 2011, 6:00pm - 8:00pm, Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street, Manchester, M4 1LE.

This free evening conference is for trustees of voluntary community organisations within the city of Manchester and will offer the opportunity to network and share knowledge of the current issues facing trustees.

With a funding crisis looming for the voluntary sector in Manchester, there will be some major decisions to be taken over the coming weeks. Although voluntary organisations are used to delegating much organisational business to their professional managers, responsibility for the major decisions remains with the trustees, both legally and to avoid practical conflicts of interest.

This evening conference is aimed exclusively at trustees, to enable you to:
share your ideas and concerns with your peers;
ensure a clear awareness of your obligations and options;
help put in place the support that you need

The event is free to attend - booking is essential.

Contact Cheryl McAlister, Training Co-ordinator 0333 321 3021 for further details or email training@mcrcommunitycentral.org

This email is to make you to make you aware of a new unique business start-up opportunity aimed at unemployed people or those facing redundancy living in Greater Manchester.
Blue Orchid is working in partnership with a project called "FranchisingWorks" to promote a new and affordable way to access franchising opportunities. For candidates with insufficient money, there is also a private fund to help meet the start-up costs of a franchise.

As you may know, franchising is where the owner of a successful business agrees to license the use of its operating systems, brand and other intellectual property, and to provide ongoing training and support to enable another (‘the franchisee') to set up and operate an identical business elsewhere. In return the franchisee pays the owner an initial fee and an ongoing management fee.
Franchising is well established in the UK: there are 842 franchises in operation including well-known high street brands such as Subway, Prontaprint, Cartridge World, Cash Converters, Domino's Pizza, Kall Kwik, Dyno Rod, Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs, Rush Hair Salons, and Thorntons.

In addition there are many more franchise businesses in everyday services such as plumbing, electrical services, car repair, IT repair, cleaning, after-school care and gardening. In short there is a franchise for just about every type of work/service you can think of, many of which require little experience and training.

With FranchisingWorks, which is a brand new publicly-funded initiative, free expert help is provided to enable you to access some of the UK's most successful franchise businesses.
Every week from 25th January we are running free ‘Finding Out About Franchising' Workshops in our Central Manchester office. The workshop, which is 3 hours in duration, will also be run in other districts of Greater Manchester during February and March.

To book a place, please email events@theblueorchid.co.uk or call 0161 341 0245.

Volunteers have been integral to both Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games since they were used for the first time at London 1948. So in 2012, the volunteer programme will be coming home to the city where it all began! The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is seeking to attract, recruit, select, and train up to 70,000 ‘Games Makers' to volunteer during London 2012 - representing the largest workforce mobilisation in peace time the UK has ever seen.

The application window closed on the 27th October, and we've been delighted with the level of public response. To help us find the best and most passionate volunteers we are planning on inviting and interviewing up to 120,000 candidates on a face-2-face basis at one of our selection events. We have procured a venue in the Docklands to be our main selection event in London and taking the experience ‘on the road' across the UK including Manchester at the Lowry DMC from the 24 March-16 April 2011. To help us undertake this huge challenge we are currently recruiting approximately 2,500 Selection Event Volunteers (SEVs) from our working partners, members of the public, sponsors, and a unique tie-in with a number of universities across the UK.

Our next and immediate task is that we need to train our SEVs, as they will not just be representing LOCOG but will need to deliver a great level of service and experience to each and every Games Maker candidate that they see ensuring it is consistent and fair for all. Our Games Maker volunteers will be the face of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, hence it's really important that our SEVs are well trained to perform in their role.
We are currently seeking trainers to join us on this unique and high profile journey, to train our SEVs. The following summarises our ask of our trainers in Manchester:

What this would entail
The training has already been designed by LOCOG, and takes 6 hours to deliver to each cohort. We currently have scoped a train the trainer session for Thursday 10th February in London, to which we will invite all individuals that will conduct the training outside of London. We (LOCOG) will also ensure that that members of the team are in attendance at the training as subject matter experts about the Games and the Games Maker Programme specifically, observing the candidates as they go through the training. Our ask of potential trainers is to attend the train the trainer session (we will cover reasonable transport and accommodation costs for this day) and deliver the training on Saturday 5th March in Manchester to our recruited Selection Event Volunteers.

Skills and experience
Candidates need to have a wealth of experience as a current or former trainer with strong facilitation skills.

If this opportunity does interest you, and you would like to find out more please send your CV to janet.matthewman@gonw.gsi.gov.uk by Friday 17 December.

This is an ideal introductory course if you are thinking of working in advice and guidance work, working in schools with parents or health and social care supporting adults into learning. Manchester Festival of Learning is proud to support Get Online Week, part of a drive led by UK Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox.

Almost 10 million Britons have never logged on and she aims to get them surfing the web surfers by 2012. If you were born before 1945, there is a six in 10 chance you won't have tried the web. That is also true of a third of us earning under £10,400. And close to half of us who left school without qualifications have never tried it. Does it matter? Yes, because it means you're missing out on massive savings - offline households lose out on about £560 a year, not to mention jobs, education and a world of fun. Martha says: "Whether it's saving money from shopping online, staying in touch with family and friends, finding a cheap holiday, getting a new job or snapping up a good deal on your power bills, the internet can help make your life easier, cheaper and more fun."

Visit www.getonlineweek.com or call free on 0800 77 1234 to find an event near you. Or spare time to help someone else get online. Just visit www.helppassiton.co.uk for more information. There are just so many reasons not to get online, aren't there?

Its not for me!
There is a website for everything under the sun, so whatever you're interested in you will find it online. You can listen to any song you can think of, find out about things happening in your community or chat with people all over the world - and most of it is absolutely free.

I don't think I can do it
Mouse, keyboard, cables - it looks complicated but there really is nothing to be frightened of. In UK Online centres and libraries nationwide you will find heaps of courses full of internet newcomers in the same boat.
Just call free on 0800 77 1234

I'm too old
Britain's oldest Twitter user, Ivy Bean, was 104, and even Sir Tim Berners Lee, the British computer scientist who invented the web, practically qualifies as a "silver surfer" - an older internet user.

I can't afford it.
Going to a local UK Online centre or library is free. If you want a home set-up, computers are getting cheaper all the time and broadband connections start from as little as £7 a month. And being online saves you money. You get discounts on shopping and holidays while firms do discounts for customers who switch to paperless bills. What if I break it?
Good news - computers don't blow up. The worst that can happen is that you can turn it off by mistake.

What about all the online crime?
There is a slight risk. But use your common sense and make sure your security software is up to date. You are likely to get unwanted messages when you get an email address, but treat them like you would unwanted post - by putting junk in the bin!

I don't understand them
There is a lot of jargon about, but you don't need to know a single word of the geek-speak to give it a go - just grab a friend or neighbour and ask for their help if you get in a muddle

I don't know where to start
Odds on your local library or UK Online centre runs beginner sessions, but if you don't have one near ask a friend or neighbour with a computer to let you have a go? They can walk you through the basics using the easy teaching website www.helppassITon.co.uk.

I didn't do well at school
Lots of us find it easier to learn on computers than we did in classrooms - you can go at your own pace and without anyone looking over your shoulder.

Why should I bother now?
A whole new world awaits on the net and you are missing out on it.

Internet myths busted...
Birds of a Feather star Linda Robson, 52, decided to learn how to surf the internet after a friend told her that even her grandfather could do it. The mum of three said: "They had to limit his time on the computer because he's been betting on the horses!" Linda, who took a lesson at her local library in London last week, said: "It's actually not that confusing. I've set up my own email address. It's great not to have to rely on the kids."

Tv presenter Gabby Logan is urging people not to get sucked into becoming a "surrogate surfer" - like she was for ex-rugby star husband Kenny.

The Inside Sport presenter, 37, said: "At first, I was the one who did everything online. He'd say, 'please book me a ticket or buy this for me'.

"But if someone in your family is not sure about the internet, the best thing is to help them get online themselves.

"The other day a box of Nike trainers arrived and Kenny said, 'Oh, I bought that'.

"I was proud of him because it showed he had come so far and now he is as keen to go on websites and send email as me."

Gabby, whose father Terry, 60, is an ex-footballer and former manager of Wales, is spearheading BT's Get It Together campaign.

She added: "Some people are daunted by the technology - my dad is really reluctant to use the computer - but there's nothing to fear. You won't look back once you get online."

‘Moving On' is a course to help those involved achieve an accredited literacy qualification, improve self-confidence, work in groups and experience practical volunteering at Victoria Baths.

The course lasts from now to early December, mainly consisting of two half-day sessions each week, with two full days involving Welcome Host training and a visit to another heritage site. The course will add to the transferable/ pre-employment skills of everyone involved.

The main educational elements are provided by Salford City College and the themes of the course have been developed from the highly successful ‘In Touch' programme provided by Manchester Museum, from which many volunteers have entered employment and/or continued their volunteering and learning. If the programme is completed, participants will receive a City & Guilds entry level certificate in adult literacy.

The Moving On half-day sessions are 9.30 am to 12.00 noon on Thursdays and Fridays.

Love your running? Could you be someone to inspire new beginners? You may be just the person to lead a group! Enthusiastic, supportive of beginners, some running experience with a bit of free time and willing to attend a one day accredited course. The aim of Run in England is to get more people active and running together. Our website has more details how to get involved as a leader and as a group member: http://www.runinengland.co.uk/

Run in England is currently looking for leaders to set up and assist with groups across Greater Manchester, these can be done at anytime in numerous locations depending on the individual leaders involved e.g. groups after/during school, at lunchtime, at work, at local parks, cafes, supermarkets, leisure centres... the list goes on!

So far we have several dates for our Leadership in Running Fitness course where leaders receive training:

Dates & Venues:
03/10/2010 Sportcity - Manchester
16/10/2010 Radclyffe Athletics Centre, Oldham* (*subsides now available for people living outside of Manchester for this course only!)
27/02/2011 Sportcity - Manchester

Time: 9am till 5pm
Price: £90**
And remember "you don't need speed to lead"!

** Volunteers living or setting up/assisting with groups in the borough of Manchester will not have to pay, only people who are keen to get involved or show an interest in setting up/supporting a group will have their course paid for.

For volunteers wanting to set up groups outside Manchester and who do not live in Manchester the team are working with GreaterSport and the other local authorities to gain some funding and to set up more courses in other areas which are subsidised. So soon we hope we can reduce the price for other volunteers.

Once qualified the volunteers can apply to be leaders and they get a free membership to Run in England: (costs £25 for self employed people)

29/08/2010 Sportcity - Manchester
03/10/2010 Sportcity - Manchester

Once qualified the volunteers can apply to be leaders and they get a free membership to Run in England: (costs £25 for self employed people)
Marketing tools to assist in setting up a group and attracting new members. Help and support as needed. Membership of a national organisation with Head Office, Area and County support.

10/07/2010 Litherland Sports Park, Liverpool
29/08/2010 Sportcity - Manchester - Places still available
03/10/2010 Sportcity - Manchester
