Manchester City Council has joined a national campaign to recruit more short break carers for disabled children. Shared Care Network - a short breaks charity - is running a ‘Tell a Friend' campaign, where current carers are being encouraged to spread the message about how valuable their work is for the children they help.
A recent survey by Shared Care Network showed that word of mouth was the way that one in three carers heard about short break care. Currently Manchester has around 30 short break carers for disabled children, but ideally Manchester City Council would like to recruit an additional 10 carers per year.
In particular, the council is looking for short break carers for secondary school aged children with autistic spectrum conditions. Potential carers would receive full training and on-going support and would need to be able to offer a minimum of two nights a month to care for a child. They would also need to have a spare bedroom in their home.
Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member for Children's Services at Manchester City Council, said: "We match carers very carefully to the families and children they help. The experience is very powerful for all: the children involved enjoy new experiences and meet new people, who often become long-term friends. And, crucially, this time off allows the child's parents to have a break, knowing that their child is being looked after in a happy and supportive environment. I hope our current carers do tell their friends about the incredible work that they do so that they can attract more like-minded individuals to provide the same high level of care."
Anyone interested in becoming a short break carer for disabled children in Manchester can speak to Anna Lomas on 0161 881 0911. For more information about Manchester City Council visit www.manchester.gov.uk

Manchester Drug & Alcohol Strategy Team (DAST), on behalf of the commissioners of many substance misuse services in the City of Manchester, is currently redesigning adult drug treatment in the City. The whole process started in 2010 and we expect it to be complete in 2012. We have recently put some material up on the internet so anyone with an interest in the issues can find out at any time how our proposals are progressing and also send us their comments. As our plans evolve in the light of feedback we receive we will put more detail up on the site.
The period from now until 21st March is crucial as shortly after that we will begin the process of tendering out the planned 3 main services. So we need feedback before then. If you would like to know at any time where we are up to please see www.manchester.gov.uk/drugsandalcohol.
Those without web access are welcome to contact us for current information: Roger Bysouth, DAST, Manchester City Council; 4th Floor, Heron House; Brazennose Street, Manchester M2 5EA on 0161 219 6930 or e-mail: r.bysouth@manchester.gov.uk

What is an Adult Placement?
An Adult Placement can be: Somewhere to live, Somewhere to go for day time support, Someone who will support you to live in your own home.
The service is available for vulnerable people aged 18 and over, who have had a Social Services Community Care Assessment, which indicates that they are eligible for the service.
Who can become Adult Placement Providers?
Anybody. No formal qualifications or previous care experience is needed to become an Adult Placement Provider. We are looking for individuals who come from a wide variety of back grounds and have different skills and experiences. Adult Placement Providers need to be flexible, sensitive, tolerant and patient and above all have a genuine interest in caring for vulnerable people. In terms of long term care, we can only accept carers who live in the city of Manchester. The Adult Placement Provider may care for the individual in their own home, in the community or in the home of the service user. If you have any doubts as to your suitability, we are always willing to have an informal discussion to chat about your suitability.
What sort of care should I offer?
This depends on many variables. Obviously, you may have particular commitments and responsibilities which will limit the time you have available. In addition, the physical layout of your home may affect the service you can offer, as we do insist that the person using the service has their own room, if you are offering short or long term care.
How do I become approved as a family based provider?
All Adult Placement Providers' are subject to an approval process. The approval process involves individual assessment and attendance at training services. This process is essential to protect the vulnerable adults placed.
Adult Placement Provider's are paid a set rate, which is regularly reviewed, for each particular service they provide. The payment rates are above the national minimum wage. Some Providers choose adult placement as their full time work, whilst others work only part time.
Individual Assessment
Prospective Providers' and member of their household are visited on several occasions by an Adult Placement Worker and a full social history and an assessment of their suitability is undertaken. A detailed application is completed and references are taken from your G.P. and two people who know you well, one of which has to agree to a home visit being made in order to further verify their reference. Criminal Record checks are carried out on the Provider in their home. We also make checks within the Social Services Department.
Training
Training is provided to help develop the skills, confidence and knowledge of Providers'. Information, both verbal and written during the training sessions. It covers information on adult placement, working with older or disabled people, health and safety and first aid. Training is compulsory, unless the Provider can show they are already competent in that area. Training is provided flexibly and can be delivered in the evening or at weekends. An Adult Placement Worker will keep in regular contact with you and offer any necessary support.
If you have a spare room and feel you could provide Adult Placement, please contact Manchester Adult Placement Services on 0161 945 7609.

Monday 3rd January 2011 - 15:00
Gigg Lane, Bury
Last winter 5,000 excess deaths occurred in the North West, many because of lack of heating and warm clothing. Every half hour of the cold winter months took someone's life in the region.
FC United hopes to play its part in helping the homeless and destitute through the winter months with our Big Coat Day.
On Big Coat Day, people are asked to bring their old winter clothing down to the forecourt at Gigg Lane Stadium in Bury where charities ‘Mustard Tree' and the ‘Boaz Trust' will load the clothing into vans to take away and distribute to those most in need. The collection will take place from noon to finish at 3pm when FC United begin their first home fixture of 2011 inside the stadium against Ashton United.
Tickets cost: Adults £8, Over-60s £5, Under 18s £2.

For the past 3 years the Boaz Trust has run a Night Shelter for up to 10 destitute male asylum seekers. This year, for the first time, our shelter is full every night - and we have 19 desperate men on the waiting list. Last night the temperature in Manchester dropped to around -5. Some of those men will have slept outside. Can you help?
We need an empty building, preferably within walking distance of Manchester City Centre. It can be a church, a pub, a hostel, even a warehouse - anything to accommodate 20-30 men overnight.
The Boaz Trust will take care of supervision, food, security, beds and bedding. Preferably the building will be free or on a peppercorn rent, but that's negotiable. The crucial thing is to get people off the streets before they freeze to death.
If you can help please contact Dave Smith, Director, Boaz Trust, 1st Floor, 110 Oldham Road, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 6AG on 0161 202 1056

Manchester City Council recently joined forces with 22 other local authorities from across the North West on a campaign to find new foster carers. The TV adverts feature some of the region's carers and show the diverse range of people who already foster for their local authority. The campaign aims to highlight the fact that there is no such thing as a 'typical' foster carer, and hopes to attract over 150 new carers from across the region to foster for their council. This is where we need your help!
Nationally there is a shortage of 10,000 foster carers, with the North West having the highest shortfall outside of London. Can you help us to find new carers for children across the region who need foster homes? Please can you spread the word about the campaign and the need for foster carers to your friends and family - and help to find those 150 new carers. Many of the people who foster and adopt work in the public sector, and have skills gained through their work which make them perfect candidates.
All foster carers receive an extensive range of support, from practical and emotional support, to training and financial support. There are various support groups for carers including mentoring schemes that benefit new carers by giving insight from experienced carers. There are lots of different types of fostering schemes that you could apply for giving you flexibility to choose an option suited to you and your life. From short break to long term fostering, we need more people to come forward and change a child's life.

The Think Lock campaign launched earlier this year aimed at reducing burglary in the city. Think Lock reminds residents of the practical steps they can take to keep their home and possessions secure.
These steps may seem simple, but one in three burglaries happen in Manchester as a result of a door or window being left open or unlocked. Council employees who regularly talk to residents are being invited to briefings to find out more about how they can support the campaign.
Simple tips to remember:
Always lock and shut your windows and doors
Use a timer and leave a light and radio on when you go out
Don't leave valuables on show
Fit a burglar alarm and remember to use it
Don't let cold callers into your home.

The Be Proud Awards give people the opportunity to nominate unsung heroes within their community who deserve an official thank you.
There are nine award categories, including the introduction of this year's Contribution to the Community (Business) Award, recognising companies that have introduced schemes, initiatives or policies that have made a positive impact in their communities.

20th November 2010 at the Ramada Hotel, Manchester, Piccadilly.
The Radio Awards are the first of an annual flagship event of PeaceFM organized by Peace Full Media Limited to showcase and thank the wide variety of presenters, DJs, music artists and supporters of our local community radio station. These awards are to recognise and reward outstanding contributions to community radio and positive community life in Manchester.
The Radio Awards will be awarded at a formal ceremony combined with dinner and dance to celebrate and give kudos to our recipients and the sponsors, and is also a formal culmination of the birthday celebration of PeaceFM radio. This year's Radio Awards will be held at the Ramada Hotel, Piccadilly, Manchester.
We greatly value the support of all our sponsors and contributors and are continuously developing the way we acknowledge and reward our sponsors.
The Radio Awards are also a time of fund-raising for PeaceFM, and revenue from ticket sales get ploughed back into administration, logistical and management costs of running the not-for-profit radio station.
As such we are looking for sponsors who share our desire to recognise and promote peace and positive behaviour in our local communities and the valuable contributions of our nominees and winners. In addition to sponsoring the individual awards, we are looking for sponsors who would like to contribute to the running costs of the actual community radio station and be recognised as PeaceFM sponsors. Our New Recruits
We are delighted to welcome another 22 volunteers into the project through the above 2 new Macmillan Solutions Services. All have successfully completed the training and are keen and eager to get on with supporting people affected by cancer. The skills amongst the volunteer team is amazing; we have people with language skills, teaching/training skills, counselling skills, nursing skills, younger members of the community, Health and Social care backgrounds, practical skills. Very importantly everyone of the volunteers is passionate and has through their own personal experience an understanding of the needs of people affected by cancer.
Hear what being involved in the project means to our volunteers; "Being a volunteer for Macmillan means I can give something back, it gives me the chance to help people in my local community, as I can fit it into my day to day life and use my skills and experience creatively. In times like these local communities need to pull together to help each other."
"A lot as Macmillan previously helped out my family so in return I want to owe them back after the kind support my family received... therefore this project means a lot as I want to support and help people!"
"I feel by being part of this project I will be able to make a difference in someone's day, if not life! Allowing someone to have one less worry or task to take care of"
Update on Macmillan Solutions@Wai Yin
Volunteers continue to support people affected by cancer in a number of ways having a positive impact on their lives. Volunteers have been able to provide emotional support to people who are either geographically or socially isolated. Their links into the Chinese community mean that they can support with specific cultural needs such as fetching in the right Chinese newspapers or supporting taking food shopping to the large Chinese Supermarkets in the city.
Some of the emotional support has also been provided over the telephone. Financial solutions have been used to support and improve satisfaction with changes to body image as a result of cancer treatments; new clothes and a wig.
The volunteers have also importantly attended cancer awareness events to help raise the profile of the service and encourage members of the Chinese community to use the service for support if they are affected by cancer.
To make a referral contact the Wai Yin reception on 0161 237 5908.
More information?
If you would like to hear more about any of the services or if you require promotional materials to give out to or promote to people affected by cancer please do not hesitate to contact the Macmillan Solutions Project Team.

How to make the most of your money is the theme of a week-long event in Wythenshawe. Money Week will be held from Monday 16 to Friday 20 August and has been organised by Manchester City Council, Willow Park Housing Trust and Parkway Green Housing Trust.
The aim of the event is to discuss all things financial and to give residents professional advice with anything from benefits to savings accounts and how to budget effectively.
The event also fits into the council's Helping Hands campaign, designed to help residents through the recession. During the week, experts including staff from Moneymadeclear - a financial advice service from the Government - will be manning stalls in the town centre and giving confidential ‘money makeovers' for anyone who is interested. An added dimension to the week is a ‘fashion on a budget' course, running at the Benchill Community Centre.
Youngsters on the course will be shown how to adapt their own clothes and will also be taken to a fabric shop in Manchester to buy material and accessories to make or customise wardrobes. The fashion course will culminate in a catwalk to display all the outfits.
For further information about Money Week please call Sandra Gaskill on tel: 0161 499 7778.

Rather than tipping items of unwanted clothing, household goods and furniture away, why not donate them to Mustard Tree?
Mustard Tree is a Manchester based charity committed to providing life support for the homeless, marginalised and vulnerable across Greater Manchester. The charity serve these communities through the provision of food, clothing, furniture and training. They aim not only to improve lives for the deprived communities around us but also work to care for the enviroment through continual re-use and recycling of resources for the benefit of those in need.
If you have any good quality clothing, bedding, household items, small electrical items or furniture that are in good condition and that you would like to donate to Mustard Tree they can be dropped off at their premises on 110 Oldham Road 9am-5pm Mon-Fri and 9am-12.30pm Sat.
For larger items or more information, you can contact them on 0161 228 7331 to arrange collection by a Mustard Tree van.

The Community Foundation gives millions of pounds a year to community groups in Greater Manchester. Over the summer, we're giving a group of young people aged 16-25 in Manchester the opportunity to get involved with what we do - they'll be closely involved in the creation of a new fund, from branding and naming the fund to fundraising for a group of their choice and ultimately handing the cheque over to the group - a programme called Summer Giving.
We did this last year and it was great fun, and should be a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills and help the local community in the process! Get in touch if you're interested or know someone who might be. The programme will run two days a week from 9th August to 3rd September.
For more information contact Chris on 0161 214 0952, or by email to chris@communityfoundation.co.uk.
