Looking for a Challenge this summer?

16 year olds from Manchester and Salford are being offered the chance to take part in Eco Challenge Xtra an exciting new programme being delivered by Field Studies Council (FSC) and Manchester Youth Volunteering Project (MYVP) this summer. Eco Challenge Extra is a National Citizen Service (NCS) programme and is one of 12 pilots being run across England in summer 2011.

FSC and MYVP are working together to provide opportunities for 168 young people in Manchester and Salford to take part in this special environmentally focused NCS during the summer holidays.

Getting involved in Eco Challenge Xtra offers young people who are finishing Year 11 this summer three weeks of exciting new challenges and experiences like making new friends, staying in new places and developing useful skills.

The three week programme includes two residential stays, the first at an FSC Centre trying out a wide range of outdoor activities.  The second week, staying closer to home, will focus on the local community, exploring green issues and learning useful skills.  This week will end with a celebration meal that the young people will have planned and prepared working to a budget.  During the last part of the programme back at home they will plan and work together on a project.

Cathy Preston (FSC) said ‘There are a range of dates available over the summer so that young people can fit Eco Challenge Xtra around existing commitments.  This is a fantastic opportunity.  It is a chance to meet people, try different things and come out with something really positive to include on job or university applications.  We are encouraging anyone who may be interested to register on the website for further details as soon as possible to make sure of a place.'

We are writing to inform you of major changes to youth volunteering in Manchester and how this will affect the support offered to young people from Greater Manchester Youth Network (GMYN) and Manchester Youth Volunteering Project (MYVP)

GMYN and MYVP have been supporting young volunteers across Manchester for many years through different projects and accredited schemes such as Millennium Volunteers, vinvolved, Green Machine and various participation projects. The Government announced at the beginning of January that they are ceasing to fund a national youth volunteering programme. This means that for the first time in twelve years, there will no longer be a national scheme funded to support young people to volunteer.

The upcoming National Citizens volunteering pilots will be running in the Summer (which GMYN and MYVP will be running in Manchester). However, this is certainly not a replacement for a national youth volunteering programme as it will only provide for a limited number of young people.

Although the national vinvolved scheme will cease to be funded, GMYN and MYVP will continue to support young volunteers across Manchester and are putting proposals together to look at how best to do this. As well as this, both our organisations are still working closely with the council to continue to support the funding of a volunteer centre in Manchester.

We are starting to plan how we can support the brokerage of volunteers from April and are asking for your help. We will be mapping what services there will be for volunteers in this current difficult climate so that we can continue to support each other and provide the best services for volunteers. We would appreciate it if you could to email us - alex.fairweather@gmyn.co.uk with the following;

1 What support would you be able to offer for the brokerage of volunteers from April?
2 What training/support can you offer to organisations that need volunteers or need to develop to enable them to take on volunteers?
3 If you are currently supporting the brokerage of volunteers etc, how will this change in April?
4 How do you think the Volunteering Community Network (VCN) could help with this?

With this information we will continue to give relevant and up-to-date information regarding the gap in volunteering support in Manchester as well as planning actions to make sure we can work together to continue supporting volunteers in the near future and beyond. This will be one of the focuses for the next VCN meeting.

If you would like any further information, please contact Alex Fairweather on 0161 274 3377 or email at alex.fairweather@gmyn.co.uk

The Mustard Tree, Manchester charity supporting and rebuilding the lives of over 8,500 homeless, vulnerable and marginalised people around the city, will be hosting an exclusive Music Night on Friday 10th December at its premises in Ancoats from 7pm to 11pm, with a special guest appearance from Steve Brookstein the first ever winner of ITV's The X Factor.

Welcoming all music lovers, and those who wish to enjoy some early Christmas cheer, this fantastic evening is a great way to support those in need, whilst enjoying some excellent entertainment. The first ever winner of ITV's The X Factor, Steve Brookstein, will perform his new charity single at the event with the aim to help the homeless at a time of goodwill. This Christmas single ‘Don't Give Up' by Together @Qristmas organisation, on sale 13th December, has been produced solely to raise money to support local homeless charities and features Steve and his wife, jazz singer Eileen Hunter.
100% of profits from the singles will go towards regional homeless charities through StreetSmart, which raises thousands of pounds for homeless charities across UK cities every year, and that includes the Mustard Tree.

As well as several songs by Steve and Eileen, the evening will also feature performances from other musical talents including two live bands, a soloist and a dance group. Whilst enjoying the buzzing atmosphere, why not enjoy a little nibble, with an array of food and drink also on sale. This promises to be an evening of fun, laughter and wonderful music, at a time of year when people should come together and share in goodwill, but when many are alone and lonely.

Steve Brookstein said: "I'm proud to be part of a great team of people doing something honourable at Christmas. Whether people decide to buy the single, donate to their regional homeless charity or just eat at a STREET SMART restaurant, if it's because of the awareness we are raising then I'll feel it's been worth it."

Paul Wenham, Chief Executive of the Mustard Tree, said: "It's incredible for the Mustard Tree to have this much needed support, especially at this time of year. Christmas is a time of celebration, but for some it means nothing more than cold and lonely nights. This event is a great way to get people together to enjoy themselves, whist raising awareness and money to support those in need."

Tickets prices start at £5 per person.
For further information or to purchase a ticket please contact The Mustard Tree on 0161 228 7331.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 Secretariat in Sri Lanka has launched its awareness campaign for engaging volunteers to work at the tournament.

The organisers are looking for committed and passionate people above 18 years to apply for the volunteering programme and over 150 volunteers will be recruited to work at the three venues in the Hambantota, Pallekele and Colombo regions. Game time volunteers will work in a variety of roles supporting functional areas such as ground entry, ticketing, ushering, transportation, catering, housekeeping, media and PR, stakeholder
experience, ceremonies, hospitality, venue support, parking lots and security. A few pre-event volunteers will work with the Secretariat and venue managers in the build up to the event.

Minimum qualifications apply which are available, along with a registration form, online on the Volunteer area at www.srilankacricket.lk.

The organisers are targeting school leavers, University students and graduates, as well as experienced corporate employees.

Regional recruitment drives and walk-in interviews will be organised between 9th to 12th in Hambantota at the Vihara Maha Devi Human Development Centre, Mirijjivila and 16th to 19th at Mahaweli Reach in Kandy. In Colombo initial applications will be called online through the Sri Lanka

website.

Applications can also be mailed for the attention of the Volunteer Manager, World Cup Secretariat, 35, Maitland Place, Colombo 7. Applications close on 31st December 2010.

It is hoped that by working at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, volunteers will develop important new skills and improve their employability in the future. Apart from the practical experience that a volunteer can gain at the event, the organisers are hoping to provide skills development workshops on open enrolment which will include Leadership Development, Team Work and Character Building. Additionally a limited number of scholarships will be awarded to outstanding volunteers to develop a vocational skill or English proficiency.

One of the outcomes of the recent University Research has been that volunteers would like to have more emphasis on "Volunteering Pride" as part of your newsletters and website.

Since we know that a lot of you enjoy being involved with MEV, we would like to ask if you'd like to write a little a bit about your experiences as a volunteer. Some of the things you could write about include:

1 Are you proud to be an MEV volunteer, why? Why do you give up your time for free?
2 What have you discovered about yourself since becoming involved with MEV. Has it given you new found independence, allowed you to meet new people, helped you through hard times or been the reason you found a job?
3 Are you proud of the city of Manchester and it's events programme, particularly how it has changed over the past 8-10 years?
4 What do you think Manchester gets out of you giving your time for free to events and local communities. Do you think we as a group of volunteers make a difference. How? W
hy?

However, don't limit yourself to these topics!!!! You can tell us about anything you want in relation to your volunteering experiences. Go on............tell us your inspirational stories and inspire your colleagues or new people who are thinking of taking part!

All you have to do is write own your thoughts and send them to us at mp@mev.org.uk or give us a call and we can write down your ideas.

What is it?
We have developed a programme to reward volunteers for the invaluable time given to MEV and host organisations. Volunteers are asked to record the number of hours spent helping out at one off events and other long-term opportunities. Once certain milestones have been reached, volunteers are presented with pin badges and certificates. To verify that they have taken part in an event or opportunity, each organiser or Volunteer Manager must sign each form

Why are we doing it?
We would like to formally recognise volunteers for the time and effort given. Even though we do ask event organisers to reward and recognise volunteers in the form of certificates, thank you letters and occasionally merchandise and parties (where available and when budgets allow), we would like to think that further rewards from MEV are an additional bonus and will hopefully encourage more and / or new volunteering activity.

How will it work?
Each time an event or other long-term opportunity is attended, volunteers are asked to record the exact number of hours volunteers. Completed and verified forms can be returned to the team on a monthly basis or as and when activities are taken part in. It's entirely up to the individual. However, as we mentioned, the hours worked will need to be verified by the event organiser who will check the details on the form and sign it.

When volunteers have volunteered a number of hours they will be presented with appropriate pin badges and a certificate of achievement. The hours that we are currently using as milestones are listed below:

50 hours of volunteering - Bronze Award
100 hours of volunteering - Silver Award
200 hours of volunteering - Gold Award
300 hours of volunteering - Platinum Award
500 hours of volunteering - Special Achievement Award

If, as part of your activity, you are offering briefings or accredited training we would ask you to include these on the Event Record so we can document this activity, ensuring that we have an accurate, up to date record of volunteers achievements.

Please note that:
We can only accredit events which have been generated through MEV. If you are asked to undertake other volunteering opportunities which have not been advertised via MEV, we will not be able to verify these activities. However, in cases like this you as the event organiser can contact the central team and register their event. This will help volunteers work towards much greater rewards. You can download a copy of the Volunteers Event Record from www.mev.org.uk/community/documents

MEV Merchandise
MEV has a range of t-shirts, jackets, pens, mugs, bags and caps, which volunteers love and which host organisations can purchase (at a reduced cost) for Reward and Recognition purposes.

For more information please contact Mark Pritchard on 0161 234 1530 or e-mail mp@mev.org.uk.

We have had the following request for help from the The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG). The LOCOG team are wondering if anyone would be interested in taking part in being interviewed and attend a number of PR events.

LOCOG are keen to find between six and ten people from range of backgrounds that have previous Games Time volunteering experience (Olympic and Paralympic ideally but Commonwealth too) and who can fit the following criteria to be interviewed:

Any people wanting to take part should have undertaken a generalist rather than specialist Games-time role.

Previous Olympic Games, Paralympic Games or Commonwealth Games volunteering experience?
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) will start recruitment in July 2010 for up to 70,000 volunteers to help stage the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. LOCOG is looking to build a team of individuals from a wide range of background that will help showcase the reality of volunteering for a major multi-sport event. Our previous Games volunteer case studies will help educate the UK public on the dedication required, the hours, the unpaid nature of the work and the personal fulfilment of being part of the Games-time team that truly makes the difference between a good Games and a great Games.

Our case studies, who will have undertaken a generalist volunteer role at a previous Games, will help LOCOG in a variety of ways over the summer to drive the application of the best possible pool of candidates for generalist Games-time volunteer roles in mid September 2010.

The previous Games volunteers will be invited to participate in various parts of the PR campaign to suit availability and interest. We will pay reasonable travel expenses but are unable to offer payment for this work.

Editorial/Media partnership case studies
These will be pitched in to regional and national press, the purpose will be to highlight the reality of Games-time volunteering and the personal skills required. Participants in this work will need to be happy to be interviewed by media and LOCOG staff, be photographed and, ideally, be able to supply photos of themselves (if available and appropriate!) of themselves on duty at previous Games.

Event Attendance
Over the summer of 2012 there will be PR launches and events around the UK to raise awareness and encourage the best possible candidates to apply. To guide you, we have roles for previous Games volunteers earmarked for the following dates and locations: 9 July (London). 27 July 2010 and 2 year countdown to the start of the 2012 Games (London). A date in mid September (locations tbc)

Film/Public Service Announcement/Electronic Press Kit Appearance
The previous Games volunteers may be asked to take part in various content making activities e.g. a short film or EPK (electronic press kit) which may also involve relevant celebrity ambassadors. This content will be used to raise the profile of the campaign at key points of the programme e.g. during the six week education programme this summer that will launch on 27 July and the mid September go live of generalist volunteer applications.

Digital Support
The London 2012 volunteering website will be a key tool for education. There is potential for previous Games volunteers to write blogs, feature in short film clips and participate in live web chats etc.

Whichever part of the PR campaign you get involved in, the sorts of questions that you would need to be ready to answer are:
1 Why did you choose to volunteer at a Games?
2 Did you have prior volunteering experience?
3 If not did volunteering at a Games encourage you to give your time in your local community afterwards?
4 What role did you undertake?
5 What did you get out of it?
6 What was the best and worst thing about your role?
7 Would you recommend volunteering at the London 2012 Games?
8 If so, why?

To register your interest please contact the MEV team on 0161 234 1532 or show your interest online at www.mev.org.uk
