Looking for a Challenge this summer?
16 year olds from Manchester and Salford are being offered the chance to take part in Eco Challenge Xtra an exciting new programme being delivered by Field Studies Council (FSC) and Manchester Youth Volunteering Project (MYVP) this summer. Eco Challenge Extra is a National Citizen Service (NCS) programme and is one of 12 pilots being run across England in summer 2011.
FSC and MYVP are working together to provide opportunities for 168 young people in Manchester and Salford to take part in this special environmentally focused NCS during the summer holidays.
Getting involved in Eco Challenge Xtra offers young people who are finishing Year 11 this summer three weeks of exciting new challenges and experiences like making new friends, staying in new places and developing useful skills.
The three week programme includes two residential stays, the first at an FSC Centre trying out a wide range of outdoor activities. The second week, staying closer to home, will focus on the local community, exploring green issues and learning useful skills. This week will end with a celebration meal that the young people will have planned and prepared working to a budget. During the last part of the programme back at home they will plan and work together on a project.
Cathy Preston (FSC) said ‘There are a range of dates available over the summer so that young people can fit Eco Challenge Xtra around existing commitments. This is a fantastic opportunity. It is a chance to meet people, try different things and come out with something really positive to include on job or university applications. We are encouraging anyone who may be interested to register on the website for further details as soon as possible to make sure of a place.'
