Volunteer Testimonials
“My first volunteering role was as a VIP driver in the Commonwealth Games, Since then I have done voluntary work in the Greater Manchester Youth Games over the past 2 years, and have just completed my first level Coaching award, I have been assistant coach at 2 Badminton festivals working with school children of all ages. I also help to run a club which caters for all age groups from age 7 to 70, and it is growing in numbers. I have also volunteered for the National Badminton Championships at the Velodrome in February 2005”.
“I got a place on a basic skills teaching course more because of my "Games" experience than my "academic" background. I was helping people use the phones in the athletes village (a basic skill!). I got a free training weekend and got a GMOCN certificate which could help with future employment. I volunteered because I thought it would be exciting which it definitely was! We had fun and learned much about other cultures. Overall I feel I got more out of the project than I put in.”.
“I became a volunteer during long term unemployment to give me something to look forward to. When I gained employment it was one of the main reasons why I got the job. The employer has given me as much support as she can with my volunteering.”
“Why did I become a volunteer? When Manchester first started bidding for the Olympic Games, I decided I would be involved in some way…….around this time I was diagnosed with MS this meant I had to give up my business and retrain. I now work part time as IT tutor ……giving me time to volunteer for sporting events. I never thought until the PGVP that I would enjoy helping out at events. From volunteering I have got two part-time jobs one as a mach day steward at the City of Manchester Stadium, to my knowledge there are 5 other ex games volunteers working there and the other job is teaching IT skills to adults one day a week. The PGVP is now an important part of my social life.”
